ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — A New Jersey Transit bus driver has been accused of causing a crash that left a police officer with life-threatening injuries in Essex County last month, prosecutors announced Monday.

Authorities said that a NJ Transit bus traveling at a “high rate of speed” ran a red light and slammed into a marked police car at 4:12 p.m. on June 20 at the intersection of Livington Avenue and Prudential Drive in Roseland.

The officer – Marc Miller, 29, of Bloomfield – was on-duty at the time, according to a statement from the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

Three passengers and the bus driver – Djimmy Evra, 40, of Orange – were also hospitalized and treated for minor injuries, authorities said.

Evra has since been charged with fourth-degree assault by auto and related offenses, prosecutors said.

“The investigation indicates that this was a senseless accident which could have been avoided,” Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens alleged.

Authorities said anyone with information about the crash can contact the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office tips line at 1-877-TIPS-4EC or 1-877-847-7432.

Bloomfield PBA Local #32 said Miller's injuries were "severe" and a long recovery period was expected.

“Mark has a long road ahead of him,” NJ State PBA president Peter Andreyev reported Monday.

“He has tremendous support and we are all praying for his full recovery,” Andreyev added.

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched for the injured officer. It has raised more than $66,000 in donations to support the officer’s family in their time of need, including his 2-year-old daughter. View it online here.
