Trees Will Replace Asphalt At Several Bloomfield Schools

Several Bloomfield schools are getting more trees. It will help combat the "heat island effect" and give kids a shady place to play.

BLOOMFIELD, NJ — Tree plantings and asphalt replacement will be taking place throughout the Bloomfield Public School District this spring, officials say.

Superintendent Salvatore Goncalves recently shared an update about some upcoming maintenance work in the district over the coming weeks.

“Our grounds will undergo several enhancements aimed at fostering a more vibrant community,” Goncalves wrote.

Here’s what is coming down the pike, the superintendent said:

Early Childhood Center - We will be planting trees in both the front and back playground area to provide much-needed shade for our children during playtime.

Berkeley - Looking forward to the addition of trees along the front and around the playground, as well as the restoration of the flower box at the gym entrance.

Brookdale - Plans include the removal of some declining trees at the front and the introduction of a dozen new trees to increase shade coverage both in the front and back areas.

Carteret - We're making a significant transformation by replacing asphalt in front of the building with trees. This initiative aims to enhance aesthetics, mitigate the heat island effect, and create more shaded spaces.

Demarest - We will be planting trees near the gym and around the front and side areas, establishing expansive shaded zones for outdoor learning and recess activities.

Fairview - Asphalt removal at the back will pave the way for trees to line the fences, creating a shaded perimeter around the playground area.

Franklin - Asphalt has already been removed along the playground's side and the introduction of trees to provide shade and improve the play area's ambiance; additional trees will be planted around the playground.

Oakview - We'll be replacing a declining tree near the playground and planting additional ones to replace it. Additionally, we'll plant a row of trees in the parking lot area to mitigate heat and foster outdoor learning opportunities.

Watsessing - Trees will adorn the front and sides of the building, enhancing the landscape and providing shade. Additionally, trees will encircle the front playground area.
