Caldwell Beautification Day on Saturday

The volunteers of Project Main Street are rolling up their sleeves Saturday for an all day clean-up around town. 

The following is a full rundown of what volunteers are doing on Saturday, which weather.com forecasts to be 70 degrees and partly cloudy. 

Schedule:

• 7:45 am: Planning committee set-up and project prep
• 8:30 am: Registration on “The Green” next to the Caldwell Public Library. Coffee and bagels will be served compliments of Rockin' Joes & Bagel Loft
• Projects underway through 12:30 p.m.
• 12:30 – 1:30: Pizza and ice cream party on “The Green” for all volunteers courtesy of our local pizza shops and Gelotti. Special musical guest: Caccio

What to wear:

• Clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.
• Work or gardening gloves. Rubber gloves will be provided.
• Don’t forget your sunscreen!

Parking/Drop off

• Park in the municipal or Community Center lots or side streets.
• There is no parking in front of The Green, but limited standing will be allowed drop-off supplies or tools. 

What to Bring:

• Any friends who want to join you. 
• Any gardening or cleaning tools you have, labeled with your name and phone number so they find their way home. Especially helpful would be wheelbarrows, garden shovels, plastic snow shovels (for mulch), spades, rakes, trowels, dustpans and brooms.

The Projects:

We will do our best to assign you to a team that aligns with your interests and abilities and would appreciate your flexibility throughout the day so that we can complete all of the projects.

The Cleanup Crew – Cleaning up and weeding along Bloomfield Avenue. No chemical weed killers will be used.

The Mulchers – Helping our street trees live healthier lives by cleaning, weeding and mulching their beds.

The Perennial Planters – Removing and replacing soil in the garden beds, planting perennials on “The Green”

The Stars and Stripes - Helping assemble and hang American Flags on the lamp posts along the avenue.

The Basket Hangers - Hanging baskets of dragon wing begonias on the lampposts (heavy lifting or ladder climbing involved).

The Beautiful Storefront Helpers - Some of our local businesses have asked for assistance as they spruce up their storefronts for our Beautiful Storefront Contest.

Beautiful Storefront Contest

• All downtown businesses have been personally invited to join us to clean up and spruce us their window displays and store fronts on Beautification Day
• Participating businesses will display a Beautiful Storefront Contest in their windows or on their doors
• Community members are invited to text to vote for their ten favorites - most beautiful or most improved
• Contest will run between May 18 to June 2, so everyone is encouraged to stroll our downtown and vote for their favorites!

Beautiful Caldwell Art Contest

• Students K-5 were invited to submit their artwork depicting our beautiful Downtown Caldwell or Beautification Day.
• We'll do our best to display this work for all to see — another great reason to stroll our downtown!

Restrooms:

Businesses offering their facilities to our volunteers will be marked with a “Project Main Street Break Station” sign. 

 Questions/Help:

• Project Main Street project leaders will be available all day.
• Someone will be on The Green the entire day for information.
• The West Essex First Aid Squad will be on-site for assistance.
