Cars Left With Keys Inside Stolen in the Caldwells

Police say two SUVS were taken from one North Caldwell driveway, a Mercedes-Benz that was left running was stolen in West Caldwell.

Two SUVS and a sedan—all with keys left inside—were reported stolen Friday morning in the Caldwells, according to police. 

A homeowner in North Caldwell said a black Mercedes-Benz and a black Lexus, both SUVS, were reported missing from a driveway at 7:20 a.m. The trucks were left open with the keys inside, according to Chief Mark Deuer.

Deuer said the cars are believed to have been stolen sometime between 11:15 p.m. Thursday and early Friday morning.

On the south end of West Caldwell near the Roseland border, a Whitaker Place resident reported her four-door Mercedes-Benz was stolen from her driveway at about 6:53 a.m. Friday.

The woman told police she had started the car to warm it up and went back in the house. When she returned outside, she said it was gone.

West Caldwell Police Chief Michael Bramhall said there were no witnesses to the incident.

“We always encourage people not to leave their vehicles unattended while running for safety issues as well as for issues such as this,” Bramhall said.

The North Caldwell Chief reminded residents to lock their cars and not leave valet keys or purses inside them.
