James Caldwell HS Juniors Receive Academic Awards

'These awards recognize students with specific academic achievements and those that have made a positive impact on their community,' said high school supervisor of guidance Vincenzina Shane.

James Caldwell High School recognized nine juniors with university awards for their academic achievements and community service this year. 

High school supervisor of guidance Vincenzina Shane announced this year’s recipients. The awards were designed to attract the talented students to the various academic universities or to pursue specific areas of study, among other things.

This year’s junior class recipients were Erika Axe, Iris Cai, Nicole Kinney, Georgia Mergner, Joseph Salter, Drew Siedel, Kimberly Theobald, Taryn Urban and Hannah Weisman.

“We are very proud of all of the award recipients, and congratulate all of them on their accomplishments to date,” said Shane. “These awards recognize students with specific academic achievements and those that have made a positive impact on their community.”

Axe received an award from the Society of Women Engineers. The award recognizes a female student for her outstanding performance in the areas of math and science.

Cai and Weisman received the Russell Sage Key Awards, recognizing academic performance and community involvement.

The Elmira Key award went to Kinney. Elmira College sponsors the award that recognizes school and community involvement.

The University of Rochester awarded Mergner the George Eastman Award that recognizes leadership; Theobald the Frederick Douglass & Susan B. Anthony award, recognizing social justice and community service; Salter the Xerox Award, which recognizes innovative approaches and information technology; and Urban the Bausch & Lomb award for science. 

Siedel earned the Rensselaer Medal Award for Math and Science from Rensselaer Polytech Institute, and the Lawrence Technological University award for excellence in math and science. Both awards recognize math and science proficiency, achievement and accomplishment.
