North Caldwell Gets $230K Grant to Pave Smull Avenue

Construction is expected to start during the summer.

Pot holes on Smull Avenue will be a thing of the past after crews repave the roadway this summer.

North Caldwell recently received a $230,000 grant from the state Department of Transportation to mill and repave the portion of Smull Avenue that runs through the borough, said borough engineer Frank Zichelli. The grant will cover the entire cost of the roadwork.

The .63-mile stretch of Smull Avenue set for a makeover extends from about Washington Avenue in West Caldwell to Mountain Avenue in North Caldwell. The suburban street lined with homes and manicured lawns is a well-traveled and connects North Caldwell with Bloomfield Avenue.

While a contractor has yet to be awarded the contract, Zichelli said he expects the construction to begin soon after school ends on June 20. Construction will take between four and five days to complete, and will include repairs to curbs.

Zichelli said the roadway was in need of a repaving. Smull Avenue in North Caldwell was last repaved about 15 years ago.
