The Rotary Club of the Caldwells funded a replacement panel for an interpretive history sign installed at the southern edge of the upland meadow in the Hilltop Reservation. The original panel had been in place for 12 years and had degraded badly. The sign tells the story of the Essex Mountain Sanatorium which was built at the turn of the last century to treat tuberculosis patients and others suffering from lung diseases. The sanatorium was completely torn down by 2002 and the site restored with warm season grasses and wildflowers. The Hilltop Conservancy wishes to thank The Rotary Club of the Caldwells and its members for this gift. The new panel is greatly appreciated.
