West Caldwell Sees Speeding Complaints; ‘Zero Tolerance,’ Cops Say
Don't expect to catch a break if a police officer catches you speeding in West Caldwell, authorities say.
WEST CALDWELL, NJ — Don’t expect to catch a break if a police officer catches you speeding in West Caldwell, authorities say.
According to a message from West Caldwell police chief Dennis Capriglione Jr., the WCPD has received “numerous” speeding complaints across the township over the past few months.
“Despite our efforts to address this issue through social media alerts, road engineering changes and enforcement, speeding continues to be a problem for both residents and visitors,” Capriglione wrote.

In an effort to tackle the problem, police are now rolling out a “zero tolerance” policy when it comes to speeding violations.
“This means if you're caught speeding, you should expect a summons — no exceptions,” Capriglione said.

“Your safety is our priority, and we need your help to spread the word,” the chief concluded. “Let’s work together to keep our community safe and responsible.”
Capriglione’s post on social media about the topic saw several comments in agreement from local residents and commuters. As seen online:
- “I was young once … I used to drive fast myself but now I’m old and realize how dangerous it is – relax, drive slow, take it easy.”
- “We need better signage at the top of Forest and Mountain Ave – and more patrols/radar. There are a lot of little kids on our street and cars come off of Mountain Ave at 45 mph and don’t slow down on Forest until they see the electronic speed sign by Redman. I’m all for the no tolerance policy – about time!”
- “The Fairfield Avenue motorcycle speedway needs this great attention. Thanks so much.”
- “Everyone is in a rush to go nowhere.”
- “School will be starting soon with kids riding their bikes, walking to school (Wilson School on the street) we are very concerned about these cars flying like crazy! Thank you.”
