West Essex Middle Schoolers Learn About Library With Scavenger Hunt

On Friday, Sept. 12, seventh graders at WEMS learned about the Middle School Library at an orientation with Librarian Catherine Spinella.

West Essex Middle School seventh graders spent their reading classes on Friday, Sept. 12 learning about the Middle School Library. Middle School Librarian Catherine Spinella spoke to students about the library and explained to them how they can locate, check out and return books. “I want you to feel comfortable exploring the library,” Mrs. Spinella told the students in one class. “We are here for you.”

Mrs. Spinella encouraged students to get to know each other and the library and to have fun learning all about the library. Students walked around the library and found where they could get a free bookmark, read a magazine or find an autobiography.

Students filled out questionnaires about the types of books they like to read and went on independent scavenger hunts of the library.

“I learned how to find a book in the library’s Destiny Catalog,” said Sam Burk of Roseland.

“The library is very organized and very big,” Allie Leitao of North Caldwell observed. “I learned that you have to pay a late fee if you don’t return a book on time, which is good to know because I plan to borrow a lot of books.”
