Aging Gas Pipes To Be Replaced In Chatham Borough

PSE&G is undergoing a system reinforcement project in Chatham Borough, leaving motorists to deal with blocked roads and detours.

CHATHAM, NJ — Work on the PSE&G pipe replacement project in Chatham Borough continues, causing months of road closures and detours.

The work, which began this month, involves replacing aging cast iron gas pipes with new, durable plastic and/or coated steel piping, ensuring the gas systems continued safety and reliability for the foreseeable future.

Work will be done between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, with the possibility of Saturday work. The gas main replacement and services portion of the project is expected to last until the winter of 2024.

The work, which began on Woodland Avenue and is now on Lafayette Avenue, will extend to Chatham Street, Fairmount Avenue, Red Road, Hillside Avenue, Ogden Street, Myrtle Avenue, Minton Avenue, and Main Street.

According to Chatham Borough Administrator Steve Williams, PSE&G crews have now moved over to Lafayette Avenue, where he anticipates they will remain for the next chunk of the process.

"There are a lot of connections that they have to go under and around, so they will be at Lafayette Avenue probably for another couple of weeks. Traffic for the most part during the day will be diverted to other streets for Lafayette Avenue," Williams said.

PSEG has stated that they will work with the local police department to manage any necessary road closures during construction.
