Child Struck In North Jersey Hit-And-Run, Police Seek Driver

Incident occurred on Main Street just before 5:30 p.m. Thursday, police report.

Madison police are asking for the community’s help after a driver struck a child walking on Main Street Thursday afternoon and fled the scene, Acting Lt. John Miscia said.

Police responded to a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle around 5:25 p.m. Nov. 19 and found a young child lying on the west bound side of the road in front of the Rosewood Condominiums, Miscia said.

The victim was walking with two others and attempting to cross the street prior to being struck, Miscia said. Following the crash, the vehicle fled the scene and continued traveling west on Main Street toward the center of Madison, Miscia said.

Witnesses told police they observed the driver traveling in the shoulder of the roadway for about a mile before hitting the victim, Miscia said.

As of Friday morning the young child was in critical but stable condition, Miscia said.

Police are searching for a white sedan or wagon-type vehicle. Anyone with information is asked to call the Madison Police Department at 973-593-3000 or the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office at 973-285-6200.
