Cherry Hill To Host Annual Sept. 11 Ceremony In 2023

Cherry Hill's annual Sept. 11 Remembrance Service will return in 2023, officials said. Here's when to mark your calendar:

CHERRY HILL, NJ - Cherry Hill’s annual Sept. 11 Remembrance Service will return in 2023, officials said.

Now in its 22nd year, the event will feature members from the Cherry Hill Fire Department, the Cherry Hill Board of Fire Commissioners and the Cherry Hill Police Department alongside Mayor Shin Angulo and members of the local council to honor the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

The service will take place at the Cherry Hill Fire Department Headquarters at 1100 Marlkress Road at 8:30 a.m.

Attendees are urged to gather near the Sept. 11 memorial ahead of the ceremony.

Nearly 3,000 Americans, including one from Cherry Hill, were killed in the suicide attacks carried out by 19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaida.

Richard Aronow, of Cherry Hill, was killed on Sept. 11, 2001. Five Cherry Hill service members were killed in the ensuing war on terror:

  • Marine Jonathan G. Cohen was killed on Oct. 1, 2005.
  • Gregory T. Dalessio, a member of the U.S. Army, was killed on June 23, 2008.
  • Marine Jeremy M. Kane was killed on Jan. 23, 2010.
  • Kenneth A. Smith, a member of the U.S. Navy, was killed on Aug. 21, 2017.
  • Marine John C. Spahr was killed on May 2, 2005.

More than 2,700 people died at the World Trade Center alone on 9/11, including the passengers of American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175. Another 184 were killed when American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into The Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and 44 died on United Airlines Flight 93 near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
