The Trump administration's suspension of SNAP benefits during the longest federal government shutdown in U.S. history placed an unprecedented strain on food pantries throughout the country.

Cherry Hill was not immune. Earlier this week, the JFCS said it was serving 155 families in need — a 35 percent increase since Nov. 1. The organization is seeking donations of nonperishable kosher food, supermarket gift cards and more to sustain families through the holiday season.

Despite the 43-day government shutdown ending Wednesday, some states are still waiting for SNAP benefits to be restored. New Jersey issued full November SNAP benefits last Friday and doesn't expect any further disruptions.
