“After 25 wonderful years of serving the South Jersey community, it is with great sadness that we announce the closing of Short Hills Restaurant and Deli effective today,” owner Jerry Kaplan said in a Facebook post. “This past year and a half has posed many challenges. The pandemic combined with my health and forthcoming retirement has led me to make this decision - one that is the most difficult of my life. The beautiful memories are countless. On behalf of my family and staff, we cannot express our appreciation for your amazing support over the years.”

“Thank you for countless wonderful meals and great times,” one patron wrote in response to the announcement. “Wishing you all the best in your retirement!”

Short Hills opened in 1997, and offered a menu of more than 200 items and full catering services. This included Cabbage Borscht, Matzoh Ball Soup and New York Style Steamed Corned Beef or Pastrami sandwiches, as well as vegetarian options and breakfast foods.

The deli was located in the Short Hills Plaza. After a fire ravaged the plaza in 2020, Classic Cake moved its operations into the deli, which was unaffected by the blaze. Classic Cake remains open. Read more here: Businesses Relocate After Short Hills Plaza Fire In Cherry Hill

“Many members of the Cherry Hill community will fondly remember sharing meals with family and friends at this beloved deli,” Classic Cake wrote in a separate post. “At Classic Cake, we will always appreciate the owners for their willingness to lend a hand when our storefront was compromised during an accidental fire. We are grateful for the kindness and dedication of the employees, who have felt more like family. On behalf of the entire Classic Cake team, we are sad to see you go and wish you the best.”

“Thank you Classic Cake for the kind words,” Short Hills said. “The feeling is mutual. This is another reminder that Classic Cake is still open and operational inside the deli. So make sure to order your sweets for holidays and special occasions and everything in between.”
