Democrats Sweep Camden County Freeholder Race

Despite the governor winning the county, Democrats held on to the board with ease, per initial, unofficial results.

Gov. Chris Christie’s coattails didn’t extend down to Camden County, where Democrats continued their complete control over the freeholder board with an easy victory Tuesday night, according to unofficial results.

Incumbents Edward McDonnell and Carmen Rodriguez defeated Republicans Kimone Smith and Ian Gill, and independents Kathleen Kunyckza and Kathryn Petner.

With 94.46 percent of the vote counted, McDonnell and Rodriguez captured 58,611 and 57,496 votes, respectively, outpacing the competition by about 17,000 votes—fewer votes than they received three years ago, but amid turnout that fell about 8 percent.

The Democrats’ win means the freeholder board remains completely under single-party rule for yet another year; Republicans haven’t controlled the board since the 1990s.
