Inside Früsen Berri, a Plan to Dent the Ice Cream Market

Peter Moran and Carla Pianka have always wanted to live in Collingswood; even considered buying a home in the borough during the real estate boom years.

Although they eventually settled in Medford, the couple remained fans of the borough and its packed social calendar, especially during the holidays.

"I've always liked the town," Moran said.

So when Moran, a mechanical engineer by day, and Pianka, a full-time physician's assistant, were looking to invest in a business together, there was one place that came instantly to mind.

"We've talked about doing this for a few years," Pianka agreed.

And after careful study, the two determined that there's never been a better time to enter the frozen yogurt franchise market—which, Moran said, has become a billion-dollar industry that is starting to affect ice cream sales.

By incorporating a coffee and espresso bar and a to-go case with pastries and other beverages, Moran hopes Früsen Berri will sustain its yogurt business through the winter.

With 18 varieties of yogurt, including low-fat, no-fat, and sugar-free options on a seasonal rotation, Moran also believes there will be enough flavors to satisfy a broad range of palates, which it engages visually as well.

The store embraces an upscale lounge aesthetic, with colorful, modern furniture offsetting textured walls and a seating area near the entrance that is dominated by a large, high-definition television. 

Outside, benches on Powell Lane provide overflow seating and a change to people-watch. 

As The Collings at The LumberYard apartment complex is completed, Moran hopes there will be more of them to see, and for many years to come.
