CHERRY HILL, NJ — Old Marlton Pike will reopen Friday after being shut down for nearly a year because of the state's Route 70 project.

Since October, Old Marlton Pike has been closed and detoured between Conestoga Drive in Cherry Hill and Marlton Village Road in Evesham.

But the roadway is expected to reopen late Friday afternoon after some finishing touches on that component of the years-long project, officials said.

Route 70 project work began in 2021, disrupting traffic, residents and businesses along the highway with various closures and detours.

Construction is now expected to be completed by winter 2026 — earlier than prior estimates of early 2027 — state transportation officials said Thursday.

Granted, work could finish even sooner. The state's Route 70 project webpage is projecting completion for next spring.

Part of the work involved closing Old Marlton Pike to install drainage and construct a headwall. The roadway runs parallel to Route 70 at the Cherry Hill-Evesham border.

From 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday, crews on Old Marlton Pike will work behind the existing barrier starting at the jughandle from Conestoga Drive to Marlton Village Road.

"The work is necessary to restripe Old Marlton Pike, remove the barrier and restore traffic back to the original configuration of one lane in each direction," said the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT).

The following detours will remain in place until 3:30 p.m. Friday:

Old Marlton Pike Eastbound Detour

  • Drivers on Old Marlton Pike eastbound will be directed to turn left onto Conestoga.
  • Drive and cross Route 70.
  • Turn right to stay on Conestoga Drive.
  • Turn left onto Route 70 eastbound.
  • Turn right onto North Cropwell Road, back to Old Marlton Pike.

Old Marlton Pike Westbound Detour

  • Drivers on Old Marlton Pike westbound will be directed to turn right onto North Cropwell Road.
  • Turn left onto Route 70 westbound.
  • Turn right onto Conestoga Drive.
  • Turn left to take the jughandle to Old Marlton Pike/U and Left Turns.
  • Cross over Route 70, back to Old Marlton Pike.

The state-funded, $153 million Route 70 project impacts a 9-mile stretch of the highway in Pennsauken, Cherry Hill and Evesham. Work includes improvements to roadways, drainage, traffic signals and sidewalks.
