Veterans Day Ceremony Highlights Week Ahead in Cinnaminson

Also, the Porch Club of Riverton and Westfield Friends School will host open houses later in the week.

Veterans Day is Monday, so take time out to thank a veteran, or at least keep them in your thoughts.

A special Veterans Day ceremony is tentatively scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday at Cinnaminson Middle School (312 N. Forklanding Road), according to the district website. The ceremony—which is open to the public—will take place at the flagpole at the middle school.

The holiday was previously known as Armistice Day—marking the end of fighting in the First World War—and was originally intended as a day set aside to honor World War I veterans. However, in 1954, following World War II, Congress renamed the holiday "Veterans Day" and it became a day to honor American veterans of all wars, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs website.

The holiday was briefly moved in 1968—via the Uniform Holiday Bill—to ensure it would always fall on a Monday (ensuring a three-day holiday for federal employees). However, it was moved back permanently in 1978 to Nov. 11—regardless of the day of the week.

The township planning board meets at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at town hall. An agenda for the meeting was not immediately available.

The Porch Club of Riverton (Fourth and Howard streets) will hold an open house at 7 p.m. Wednesday for women interested in joining the club. For more information, contact Jan DeVries at 856-829-5315 or visit the Porch Club website at www.theporchclub.org.

Sixth- and seventh-graders at Westfield Friends School will have their annual dance at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The school will also host an open house for prospective students and parents on Sunday, from 2-4 p.m.
