Cranford Introduces New Approach To Parking Violations During 'Emergency' Traffic Situations

These situations include weather conditions, accidents, street sweeping, public celebrations and more.

CRANFORD, NJ - The Cranford Township Committee is looking to approve a new method to address parking violations during traffic situations deemed worthy for emergency adjustments throughout the community.

At Tuesday evening's Township Committee Meeting, an ordinance was introduced to establish a first-level offense of $40 for anyone convicted of a violation during an emergency. These situations include weather conditions, accidents, street sweeping, public celebrations and more.

Currently under Section 4, Chapter 410-4 in the Cranford Code of Ordinances, every person convicted faces an immediate fine of no more than $50 and/or prison time not to exceed 15 days.

Tuesday's amendment would establish a starting point of a $40 fine before moving to the higher amount and/or prison time for violations of other provisions or supplemental offenses. Both this procedure and new amendment are to be enforced unless "another penalty" is provided by New Jersey statute and 410-53.

The board unanimously voted to pass the ordinance along to a public hearing that will be held on Oct. 7 before it moves to be voted on.
