Man With Loaded Semi-Automatic Gun Arrested In Cranford: Police

Police said they found the gun during a two-car motor vehicle crash investigation on Sunday.

CRANFORD, NJ — A Hudson County man was arrested after police said he had a loaded firearm during a motor vehicle crash investigation in Cranford on Sunday.

At around 12:18 a.m., Officer Travis Freeman found a two-car motor vehicle crash on Centennial Avenue near Hayes Street. Detective Robert Jordan was called to help.

During the motor vehicle crash investigation, Freeman found a loaded firearm on a person suspected of having been involved in the crash, said police.

The suspect, later identified as Wendell Moreland, 20, of Jersey City, was taken into custody without incident.

Moreland was found to be in possession of a loaded H&K semi-automatic handgun containing 11 rounds of ammunition, said police.

Moreland was charged with second-degree possession of a firearm, fourth-degree possession of large capacity magazines. Moreland was committed to the Union County Jail pending a detention hearing.
