2 Cranford High School Students ID'd As Girls Fatally Hit On Bikes: Mayor

Messages of support and strength from the community are being shared.

CRANFORD, NJ — Two Cranford High School students have been identified as the girls fatally hit while riding their bikes in the township on Monday, confirmed Mayor Terrence Curran.

"We join the families, friends, and entire Cranford community in mourning the loss of two young women from Cranford High School," Curran said in a joint statement with Commissioner of Public Safety Kathleen Miller Prunty. "Our hearts go out to all those affected during this time of unimaginable grief."

At around 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Cranford Police arrived at Burnside Avenue after two teenage bike riders were hit by a vehicle, according to authorities.

CBS News New York reported the driver fled the scene but is now in custody.

The two girls were airlifted to the hospital, where they later died, authorities said.

"Our Cranford community suffered a terrible tragedy this evening," Superintendent of Cranford Public Schools, Dr. Scott Rubin, said in a statement to the district community. "Our thoughts are with all of you, and especially the families and closest friends of the students involved."

The Cranford Board of Education canceled its meeting scheduled for Monday night.

Messages of support, grief, and accounts from those around the neighborhood continued to circulate online Tuesday.

"Her mom just screamed,” said Leo De Cristoforo, who lives in the area told PIX11 News.“I just heard a loud scream, and I ran out my door and she was just crying; her brother saw her get hit and they said it was on purpose, and they were just crying.”

"One thing I can say about Cranford Township...you guys stick together and come together...keep praying for our children and times like this," Rico Kay added Tuesday afternoon in the Cranford Neighbors Facebook group.

"If you live on Burnside and have (a) ring doorbell, please give the video to police!," another concerned commenter wrote.

The driver has not been identified, and authorities have not confirmed any motives behind the crash.
