Stranded Humpback Whale Dies As Shutdown, Storm Hinder Recovery
A young humpback whale that washed ashore in Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge has died, and efforts to recover the animal have been hampered by the federal government shutdown and erosion from a recent nor'easter, according to media reports.
The 29-foot whale was discovered on the bay side of the refuge underweight and bearing scars on both sides that appeared to have been caused by a boat propeller, according to the Asbury Park Press.
The whale was first spotted Oct. 17 around 3 p.m. during a state Department of Environmental Protection aerial survey. Recovery efforts since then have been difficult, the report said.
