Across New Jersey and the nation, there is a crossing guard shortage, putting many students at risk.
In Edison, the Municipality had planned to outsource the service. The crossing guard shortage resulted in police officers covering those assignments at a significant cost to the township.
Edison Council even approved putting out bids for private companies to provide crossing guards. But the plan had to be put on hold.
Similar situations exist in West Orange, Newark, Hoboken , and other towns.
The nationwide shortage is partly driven by low minimum wage as people opting for these jobs feel the salaries are not adequate.
