Overnight Closure Planned For Route 18 Southbound In East Brunswick

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — Route 18 southbound is scheduled to be closed and detoured overnight as the Route 18 Drainage & Pavement Rehabilitation Project advances in East Brunswick, the NJ Department of Transportation said.

Beginning at 10 p.m. on Monday until 5 a.m. on Tuesday, and continuing each night through Friday at the same time, Route 18 southbound will be closed from Tices Lane to Milltown Road, officials said.

The full road closure is necessary to reconstruct the right lane on Route 18 southbound. In case of inclement weather, work will take place the following night.

During the closure, officials said the following detour will be in place for drivers:

• Motorists on Route 18 southbound will be directed to turn right onto Tices Lane
• Turn left onto Harts Lane
• Turn left onto Milltown Road, back to Route 18 southbound OR turn left to take the ramp to South River/New Brunswick, back to Route 18 northbound

This work is part of the $86.1 million federally funded Route 18 Drainage & Pavement Rehabilitation Project that will make repairs on about four and a half miles of Route 18 in East Brunswick.

Work includes milling and paving, improvements to the drainage systems and storm water basins, utility relocation, installation of new sidewalks and ADA-compliant curb ramps and upgrading guiderail.

Improvements will also be made to various intersections throughout the project limits. The project is expected to be completed in late 2027.

Variable messaging signs are being used to provide advance notification to the motoring public of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
