East Brunswick Declares October Hindu Heritage Month
The proclamation also honored 132 years of Hindu American contributions to the United States.
EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — Mayor Brad Cohen and the East Brunswick Township Council have officially proclaimed October 2025 as Hindu Heritage Month, recognizing the significant contributions of Hindu Americans to the community and the nation.
Sanatan Dharma, commonly known as Hinduism, is the world's third-largest religion, with over 1.2 billion followers globally and approximately 4 million in the United States.
The proclamation acknowledges how the nation has benefited from Hindu American contributions, including Vedanta philosophy, Ayurvedic medicine, classical Indian arts, dance, music, meditation, yoga, literature, and a strong spirit of community service.

The year 2025 holds special significance, marking the 132nd anniversary of Hinduism's official introduction to the United States. In 1893, Swami Vivekananda addressed the World's Parliament of Religions in Chicago, Illinois, bringing Hindu philosophy to American audiences.
The proclamation, read by Council Member Dinesh Behal, also commemorates the 125th anniversary of his founding of the Vedanta Society in San Francisco, California in 1900.

At the heart of East Brunswick's Hindu community stands Ved Mandir, the first Hindu temple in the area, built in 1982 by Anantshrivibhushit Swami Shri Gangeshwaranandji Maharaj Udasin Maharaj. Beyond serving as a place of worship, Ved Mandir has become a vital community resource, offering free medical camps, yoga classes, and Sanskrit instruction.
The temple provides hot meals twice weekly and during all major Hindu festivals, embodying the Hindu tradition of selfless service.
October is a month of celebration for Hindus worldwide, featuring numerous festivals and observances. Hindu residents of East Brunswick observe major festivals throughout the month, including Durga Puja, Karva Chauth, and Diwali.
Diwali, known as the Festival of Lights, is Hinduism's most significant celebration, commemorating the victory of good over evil.
"East Brunswick is committed to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for all residents, recognizing and celebrating the diverse cultures and traditions that make our community vibrant," the proclamation states.
Through this proclamation, East Brunswick seeks to promote greater understanding and appreciation of Hindu American history, culture, and contributions, while honoring the rich diversity that strengthens the community.
