East Brunswick Police Warns Residents About E-ZPass Scam

The police department has shared tips on how to spot the scam.

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ – The East Brunswick Police Department is warning residents about a new scam targeting E-Z Pass users.

Garden State residents are receiving messages claiming to be sent by "NJ E-ZPass Toll Services" that direct them to click a link to pay an outstanding toll balance to avoid a late fee.

This message is fraudulent, the company said, and drivers should delete the texts immediately and not click on any links embedded in the messages.

“The FBI is once again warning Americans not to respond to scam road toll collection texts after receiving more than 2,000 complaints this month,” East Brunswick police said.

“The texts impersonating state road toll collection agencies attempt to get phone users to reveal financial information, such as credit or debit cards or bank accounts.”

The police department shared some tips on what to do if one receives such texts:

1. File a complaint with the IC3, www.ic3.gov, be sure to include:

  • The phone number from where the text originated.
  • The website listed within the text

2. Check your account using the toll service's legitimate website.

3. Contact the toll service's customer service phone number.

4. Delete any smishing texts received.

5. If you clicked any link or provided your information, try to secure your personal information and financial accounts. Dispute any unfamiliar charges.
