Garage Sale Signs Must be Properly Set, Township Says

Residents are reminded that garage sale signs must be free-standing and cannot be posted on township trees, signs or fences.

Township residents planning on setting up garage sales this spring are reminded that signs advertising sales must be free-standing.

At Monday night's Township Council meeting, clerk Nennette Perry said that the complaint received most often during garage sale season is that signs are posted on trees, telephone poles and fences.

Township codes allow only free-standing garage sale signs, Perry said.

Code enforcement will take town the information on improperly posted signs and a letter will be sent to the corresponding addresses, Perry said.

The township is "very lenient" in speaking with people who may break the code in advertising their garage sales, but those that leave signs up for weeks at a time are at risk of being issued a summons, said township administrator James White.

"Those who leave the signs up for two weeks, three weeks...really try our patience and are asking for a summons," White said. "Sometimes they will be successful in getting one."
