Hazardous Materials Found in Route 18 Building

Chemicals commonly used to make methamphetamine were found in the building

The East Brunswick Police Department and Middlesex County Hazardous Materials team found chemicals commonly used to make methamphetamine in a household at 200 Route 18, Thursday.

According to police, officers responded to a report of hazardous materials being stored in one of the tenants' offices. After the building was evacuated HazMat teams, in full protective suits, entered the building. 

After a thorough search, several household chemicals used to make the drug were found and removed. The building was deemed safe to all tenants except the occupants of the particular office where the chemicals were found until a decontamination of that office could be conducted.

Detective Sgt. Kevin Zerbo said no methamphetamine was found and that several other key chemicals used to make the drug were not present. The chemicals that were found were disposed of, he said. 

East Brunswick Fire Department District 2 and District 2 Fire Marshall were on scene to stand-by. East Brunswick Rescue Squad also was on stand-by.
