Knights Who Say 'Ni' Invading East Brunswick

Monty Python's Spamalot will run at Playhouse 22 from Nov. 8 through Nov. 24.

It began as a cult comedy classic that spawned scores of classic lines poorly imitated by the masses before finding its way to the bright lights of Broadway, and now Monty Python's classic is coming to East Brunswick.

Playhouse 22, East Brunswick’s Community Theater, will present the hit "Monty Python’s Spamalot," which opens Nov. 8 at the East Brunswick Community Arts Center.

"It's lovingly ripped off from (the movie) Monty Python and the Holy Grail and basically follows the same plot," said Director Mark Kalet. "There's a lot of Python-style gags and it's just a very funny show. It brings that slapstick style humor in a romp through Authorian legend."

The original 2005 Broadway production garnered 14 Tony Award nominations, winning three awards, including the Tony for Best Musical of the 2004–2005 season. With classic characters like the Brave Sir Robin, the Knights Who Say Ni and a bloodthirsty mass murdering bunny rabbit, the sublimely ridiculous show allows fans of Monty Python to rejoice with some of their favorite lines and gags.

"I've been a Python fan since I was 8-years-old so this is a culmination of my sense of humor and it plays into everything I like to do," Kalet said. "We have a big cast and there's a lot of moving parts, but it's a great deal more fun than some other shows. We're having a great time with it and we feel like people won't be able to leave without laughing at something, and probably laughing at most of the show."

Directed by Kalet of South Brunswick, along with musical direction by Rory Chalcraft of South River and choreography by Jaime Moritz of East Brunswick, the show will run through Nov. 24.
