Leaf Collection A Safety Issue, East Brunswick Mayor Says
Loose leaves often end up in storm drains resulting in flooding and other issues.
EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ – Mayor Brad Cohen sent out a message to the East Brunswick community on Friday, informing residents of the upcoming leaf collection schedule.
Leaf pick-up will begin throughout the Township on Monday, Nov. 4.
Cohen reminded residents that leaves need to be left in bags or piled on the curb not in the street, as it can be a safety issue. “Clearly it is a safety issue as we all know that when leaves are wet or frozen, they are extremely slippery and can pose an accident or fall problem,” Cohen said.

He also noted that when left out on narrow roads, it is very difficult for cars to pass also causing a safety issue.
“And finally leaves left in the street will invariably end up in storm drains which can result in flooding when we have heavy rains. State Department of Environmental Protection is enforcing stormwater regulations and management due to the heavy rains that we have had over the past few years, and they have all resulted in severe flooding,” Cohen said.

East Brunswick has a limited size crew to pick up the leaves and clear the thousands of storm drains throughout the Township, hence it is imperative for residents to follow the guidelines during leaf collection.
