SOUTH RIVER, NJ - A massive blaze at an abandoned warehouse in Middlesex County spread to several buildings late Tuesday into Wednesday, according to multiple reports.

The fire broke out at around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday at a warehouse on Herman Street in South River and spread to adjacent homes, abc7 reported. The structures are all abandoned, according to News12.

First responders drafted water from the nearby river to douse the flames, abc7 added.

90 firefighters from 17 different engines responded to the blaze, News12 reported. As of 5:30 a.m., crews had been at the scene for over nine hours.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Officials believe the fire may have been gas-fed, abc7 added.

Due to the use of fire hydrants, South River residents may experience low water pressure and/or discolored water, officials said in a Nixle alert Wednesday.

“If experiencing discolored water, avoid doing laundry until the color returns to normal,” officials said.

Smoke from the fire may also affect air quality in the area, PIX11 reported. As of Wednesday morning, a “moderate” air quality was detected from Warren to Burlington counties.
