Of the 50 votes cast in last week’s poll, 46 people said the filler is disgusting, while four other people said it is just one more “unappetizing 'ingredient' they're throwing in my food, why worry.”
“Pink slime,” or “lean, finely textured beef,” consists of beef trimmings that have been treated with ammonia gas to kill bacteria, and then simmered at low heat and spun in a centrifuge to separate out excess fat, according to Supermarket News.

McDonalds, Burger King and taco Bell all have said they won’t be using the pink stuff anymore. spokeswoman Santina Stankevic said the grocery story grinds its meat several times a day and that there are no additives in its meat. Those who do their shopping at A&P also are in luck. The company also owns SuperFresh and Pathmark.
According ABC News, Ahold USA, which owns and Giant, said it’s stores do carry Finely Textured Beef, though “we are not purchasing any fresh ground beef that includes Finely Textured Beef produced using ammonium hydroxide. Finely Textured Beef is 100% lean beef and is absolutely safe for consumption."
Patch poster Theresa Lam had one surefire way to make sure your hamburger meat doesn't have pink slime.
“Buy grass fed beef from local farms such as Beechtree Grassfed Beef or Cherry Grove Farm (meat & cheese). It's a 40 minute drive from here, so either take turns with friend driving there, or buy and freeze. You'll find them at the local farmers markets beginning in May. http://rutgersgardens.rutgers.edu/farmmarket.htm.”
Other’s said finding the right supermarket is key.
“Shoprite is great at grinding the meat, butterflying it or whatever other types of cuts you want!” said Kim.
