Red Light Camera: Here's What You Said.

Many Patch Readers aren't fans of the camera at Tices Lane and Route 18,

Not a lot of East Brunswick residents have been caught by the camera set up at the intersection of Tices Lane and Route 18, but that doesn’t mean they still don’t like the thing.

.

In the comments section, most posters took the time to vent their frustration about the camera, saying it is nothing more than a way to make money.

“Let's stop all the statistical inquiries already about how much safer the intersection is...or isn't. The accidents that are destined to occur...WILL OCCUR. Cameras do not negate stupidity. THIS is a MONEY MAKER... a low maintenance REVENUE STREAM....and nothing more,” said John Romano.

Since it went live, 10,384 traffic violations have been issued for a total of $902,668, with the township and county each receiving $285,560 and the remainder going to the state and ATS. .

Blueman101 said the whole point of the light was to reduce accidents, not to generate money.

“Once again another Red Light article showing how many tickets have been dispensed as a measure of success.

“We were told the primary reason for the Red Light PILOT program was to reduce accidents at a high accident intersection.

“Beautiful graph but please complete it by adding the % reduction in accidents so we can judge if the PILOT program is working as designed,” he said.

Township officials have said accidents have been reduced at the interesection, but did not have statistics available.

Poster Kevin Wyman  questioned how much ATS is receiving to run the light.

“Why not show another column for the portion going to ATS? For me, that is the "annoying" part of these traffic cameras.....that some company is profiting from them,” he said. “I think there probably is some better "data mining" to be had here...like how many tickets are "right turn on red" or how many are cars pressing thru the red light when making the left turn from Tices to go south on Route 18 during peak traffic hours? How many times does administrative review NOT give a ticket, etc.....”

Martin Spielman agreed.

“Unfortunately I have to side with the naysayers on this one. I believe that the sole motivating factor here is money. ATS make money. The state make money. The county makes money. The township gets money. The roadway in the area is still poorly designed and full of potholes; where's the money for that?”
