Rt. 18 Southbound To Close Nightly This Week In East Brunswick

The overnight work is part of an $86.1 million federally funded rehabilitation project.

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — Route 18 southbound will be closed overnight for five consecutive nights this week between Tices Lane and Milltown Road as part of a major drainage and pavement rehabilitation project in East Brunswick, the Department of Transportation said.

The overnight closures begin tonight (Monday, Sept. 8) at 10 p.m. and will continue through Friday, Sept. 12, with work scheduled from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. each night.

The closures are necessary to install water main infrastructure and drainage systems.

If weather conditions prevent work on any scheduled night, construction will shift to the following evening.

During closures, motorists traveling southbound on Route 18 will have two detour options:

Primary Detour:

  • Turn right onto Tices Lane
  • Turn left onto Harts Lane
  • Turn left onto Milltown Road to rejoin Route 18 southbound

Alternative Route:

  • Turn left to access the South River/New Brunswick ramp
  • Return to Route 18 northbound

The overnight work is part of an $86.1 million federally funded rehabilitation project covering approximately 4.5 miles of Route 18 in East Brunswick. The comprehensive project includes:

  • Road milling and repaving
  • Drainage system and storm water basin improvements
  • Utility relocations
  • New sidewalk installation with ADA-compliant curb ramps
  • Guiderail upgrades
  • Intersection improvements throughout the project area

Construction is expected to continue through late 2027.
