Three Seek Seats on School Board

The names of three people who want to serve on the East Brunswick Board of Education will be on the ballot in November.

Incumbents Vicki Becker and Meredith Shaw will be seeking three-year seats on the school board as will newcomer Kevin McEvoy. All three filed their applications to run before the Tuesday deadline. Incumbent Susan Karp did not file an application to run again. There are three, three-year seats up for grabs.

Under the new rules, a school budget would not go to the voters unless the district was asking to spend over the 2 percent cap. Board members said the move would mean taking advantage of the larger turn out at General Elections, all day polling hours, money saved by combining the school and General Election, and giving voters a clearer picture of why the board is asking for a spending increase.

While two incumbents are seeking reelection, newcomer McEvoy is no stranger to the school district. In June, McEvoy will retire after 35 years with the East Brunswick School District, where he taught social studies and United States History and coached track and soccer,

McEvoy started his career in 1977 as a social studies teacher and track and soccer coach before moving to the high school in 1985, where he taught U.S. History I and II, wrote curriculum such as “Rock and Roll: A Unique Cultural Phenomenon” and “The Holocaust and Its Architectural Design: 1939 to 1945” and touched the lives of thousands of students.
