With today being the third Friday in September, it also brings the annual observance of POW/MIA Recognition Day.
While it began in 1979, the first year the remembrance day was held on the third Friday in September was 1986, according to Holiday Insights. This serves to honor and hope for the safe return of American prisoners of war and soldiers designated as missing in action.
Federal law requires the POW/MIA flag flown at Post office buildings, Veterans Administration offices, military memorial facilities, and other U.S. government buildings.
