School is barely finished in East Brunswick, but a team of swimmers at Village Swim Club are already hard at work practicing for summer competitions.
Head coach and club manager Lynette Mullins said the team is made up of about 60 kids between the ages of 5-17.
The team takes to the water every weekday to work on their strokes, headed by Mullins and her assistant coaches.
It is open to swimmers of all skill levels.
"We encourage beginners because it's a good first step before they go to winter swimming (teams)," she said.
The team is part of the Raritan Valley Swim League, which includes teams from the Plainfield Country Club, Wynnewood Swim Club in Piscataway, Woodside Swim and Tennis Club in Edison and Springwood Swim Club in Colonia, Mullins said.
They compete weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and championships are set for July 27, she said.
Last year, the team took third place out of six teams at the championships, and in 2011, came in second place for the first time in 30 years, Mullins said.
Summer 2013 is the club's 50th summer in operation, and Mullins' 18th summer.
After graduating from the team, she was asked to assistant coach before moving into the position of head coach and club manager.
"The families here are great," she said.
Enrollment for the Village Swim Club is still open. More information can be found here.
