Operation Take Back Returns to Florham Park

Law enforcement to hold medication disposal event Saturday at police headquarters on Ridgedale Avenue.

Florham Park residents, are your medicine cabinets inhabited by prescription and over-the-counter drugs that have gone unused or are expired? The Florham Park Police Department's community Policing Division has a way to help get rid of them safely, in confidence and at no cost to you.

The department holds its Fall 2013 Operation Take Back Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Florham Park Police Department, 111 Ridgedale Ave.

The Center for Prevention & Counseling in Newton says drug take back initiatives protect public health. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse, according to an organizational statement that shows high rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. and big numbers of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.  Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from home medicine cabinets.  In addition, flushing medications down the toilet or throwing them in the trash poses potential safety, environmental and health risks.
