Cranbury Mayor: DOMA Ruling is Step Toward Full Equality

Cranbury Mayor Glenn Johnson said that the Supreme Court decision moves gay married couples closer to equal rights.

After the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down one portion of the Defense of Marriage Act Wednesday, many politicians stated that the decision was a move in the right direction, including Cranbury Township Mayor Glenn Johnson.

In an email Wednesday, Johnson said, “it is an incremental change and doesn't provide for full marriage equality, but it moves the status of gay married couples closer to full equality than they were yesterday.”

In a pair of decisions Wednesday, the Supreme Court ruled that a law barring legally-married gay couples from receiving a host of federal benefits afforded to heterosexual couples is unconstitutional and paved the way for same-sex marriage to become legal in California.

In a 5-4 vote, the court struck down a provision of the Defense of Marriage Act, the law blocking benefits for gay couples, from tax breaks to pension benefits. Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote the majority opinion, saying the law violated the guarantee of equal protection under the U.S. Constitution.
