East Windsor Week in Review

As part its annual pipeline maintenance program, New Jersey American Water will temporarily change the water treatment process at its Raritan-Millstone Water Treatment Plant in Bridgewater and its Canal Road Water Treatment Plant in Somerset from a chloramine (a combination of ammonia and chlorine) to free chlorine. The change will begin on Jan. 7 and last through February. During this time period, Cranbury customers may notice an increase in the taste and smell of chlorine in their water. 

A New Chapter Opens For the Cranbury Bookworm

For the past 39 years, generations of book lovers from near and far have spent hours at the Cranbury Bookworm foraging through book after book in search of a literary treasure. In March, the Bookworm will move from its current location at 54 North Main Street up the street to 79 North Main Street, and while owner Andrew Feldman is optimistic the move is a means to a greater end, he also laments leaving behind a space to which so many are sentimentally attached.

Frontier Adds More Non-Stop Routes from Trenton-Mercer Airport

Frontier Airlines announced it will expand its low-fare service at Trenton-Mercer Airport with the addition of five nonstop destinations launching in April. Frontier will now provide customers with convenient, low-fare service to Atlanta, Chicago-Midway, Columbus, Detroit, and Raleigh/Durham. This is in addition to Frontier’s previously announced nonstop service to Fort Myers, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Tampa, and New Orleans.

Cranbury Company Bids to Provide Lawrence with Dispatching

Private companies interested in providing police/911 emergency dispatching services for Lawrence Township had until 11 a.m.Thursday, Jan. 3, to submit sealed bids in response to a formal “request for proposals” issued by the township on Dec. 4. The only taker was from Cranbury-based iXP Corporation to staff the Lawrence Township Police Department Communications Center for up to five years from April 1, 2013, to March 31, 2018, at an annual cost of $719,400, or $59,950 per month.

With an investment expected to exceed $200 million, Amazon plans to open a one million-square-foot “fulfillment center,” creating “hundreds of full-time jobs with benefits,” near the New Jersey Turnpike in Robbinsville Township, the online retailer announced. “Phase one of Amazon’s new state-of-the-art fulfillment center in Robbinsville will spur growth and investment for the Garden State and our local economies while bringing meaningful job creation opportunities for New Jersey’s families,” Gov. Chris Christie said in the news release.

East Windsor Welcomes New Dentist

Mayor Janice S. Mironov and Township Council Member Peter Yeager joined Dr. Polina Barenbaum to celebrate the grand opening of Modern Dental Care. The office is in a retail/office building with a recently renovated modern façade, located between Bottle King and American Diner on northbound Route 130.  Modern Dental Care offers an array of general dental services including preventative care, periodontics, and endodontics, and a variety of cosmetic services including whitening and bonding.

Drew School PTO Needs Fundraising Help

The Perry L. Drew School PTO is comprised of a group of dedicated parents with a goal of supplementing the educational experience of the students in the school. On Feb. 22, the PTO will host a silent auction at the school to help raise needed funds for the many programs they sponsor and to further offset additional costs to students. The PTO is requesting donations from select sponsors in order to make this event a great success and to help fulfill the goals and dreams of the group.

East Windsor Shelter Dog Helps Reunite Lost Pooch With Owner

For a local family who desired no greater Christmas present than the return of their missing beagle, a helping paw from a fellow shelter dog helped provide a happy holiday. On Christmas Eve, an alert was issued for a lost beagle named Cooper in East Windsor. Cooper's collar had snapped and he took off running at about 10:30 p.m. on Dec. 23, leaving the family devastated.

East Windsor Fire Department Receives $45k Grant

The East Windsor Volunteer Fire Department #2 was one of six departments statewide to receive part of more than $640,000 in federal funding this week. U.S. Senators Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Robert Menendez (D-NJ) announced Monday the awarding of the funds through the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program. East Windsor received $45,000, money that can be invested in new equipment and training or safety operations.

The Season Is Here: Where to Get Flu Shots

Flu season is coming early in parts of the United States: This time last year, flu cases were lower in New Jersey than they are now, according to data on Google's Flu Trends. (Town-specific data is not available on Flu Trends.)  If you're considering getting a flu shot, here are some places in East Windsor that offer the vaccine. 

A 27-year-old Cranbury Township man died from injuries he suffered after being ejected from his motor vehicle in a 10:48 a.m. accident on I-195 at the Jackson/Howell Township border on Saturday. Carl Henninger was traveling eastbound in a Chevy Lumina when he apparently lost control, ran off the left side of the center median and struck another vehicle on the westbound side, State Police Spokesman Sgt. Adam Grossman said. Henninger was pronounced deceased at the scene, said Grossman.
