Free Photo ID For Mercer County Veterans

The ID card is normally $10.

During the week prior to the Memorial Day weekend, Mercer County Clerk Paula Sollami Covello remindsΒ MercerΒ CountyΒ residents that the Clerk’s office offers free Veteran ID cards.

Normally, veterans pay a special reduced fee of $10, halfΒ theΒ normal price for a general ID card. However, duringΒ theΒ weeks of Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Veteran’s Day, ID cards areΒ free.

β€œSo, now isΒ theΒ time ofΒ theΒ year to pick one up,” suggestsΒ theΒ CountyΒ Clerk.

ID cards that indicate a Veteran’s status have become very useful as many home improvement retailers now offer discounts to veterans during Federal holidays. Veterans can receiveΒ their photo ID card by visitingΒ theΒ Mercer County Clerk’s Office located inΒ the Old Courthouse atΒ 209 South Broad St.Β inΒ Trenton. The Clerk’s Office is open from Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Wednesdays until 6:30 p.m.

A Certificate of Release - Discharge from Active Duty, or DD-10214 Form for short, is generally issued when a service member is honorably discharged from active military duty. The document contains information normally needed to verify military service for benefits, retirement, employment, and membership in veterans' organizations. Additionally, filing a DD-214 form isΒ freeΒ of charge to Mercer County Veterans.Β 

β€œBecause military papers can get damaged or lost, veterans should take advantage ofΒ theΒ opportunity to file copies ofΒ their DD-214 discharge papers withΒ theΒ Clerk’s Office,” said Sollami Covello, whose office maintains and preserves official documents and records forΒ MercerΒ County.Β Β β€œIf a copy ofΒ their discharge papers are needed inΒ theΒ future, a veteran, an immediate family member or a legally recognized representative ofΒ their estate may obtain one with proper identification,” noted Sollami Covello.Β 

Free ID cards during the following holidays:

  • Memorial Day -Β Monday, May 20 - Friday, May 24
  • Fourth of July -Β Monday, July 1 - Friday, July 5 (Closed Thursday, July 4)
  • Veteran’s Day -Β Monday, November 4 - Friday, November 8Β 

The requirements for a Mercer County ID card are:

  • Must be aΒ MercerΒ CountyΒ resident for at least 6 months.
  • Must produceΒ theΒ following:
    • A valid birth certificate with a raised seal or a naturalization certificate.
    • A valid NJ Motor Vehicle License or voter registration card or, lease agreement.
  • To haveΒ theirΒ USΒ military veteran status designated onΒ theΒ ID card, veterans must also produce or registerΒ their DD-214 honorable discharge papers withΒ theΒ CountyΒ Clerk's Office.
