Peddie Alum Dies at 80

William Henry Joyner, Jr. of Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach, NC, died peacefully February 5, 2013, at his home. He succumbed to Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis after a long and hard fought battle.

Bill was born on September 17, 1933, in Madison, New Jersey. He was the son of the late Florence Eleanor Latus and William Henry Joyner of Chapel Hill, NC. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Georgia Cobb Joyner and by his children, Elizabeth Joyner Parker and her husband Paul Conroy Parker of Wilmington, N.C., William Henry Joyner III and his wife Jennifer Goodwin Joyner of Charlotte, N.C., and Mildred Joyner Long and her husband John Patrick Long of Chapel Hill, N.C. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Georgia Borden Parker, Paul Conroy Parker, Jr., Lillian Geiger Parker, William Joyner Parker, Eliza Wilson Joyner, William Henry Joyner, IV, Patrick Goodwin Joyner, Julia Borden Long and John Hannon Long as well as his sister, Virginia Joyner Reilly.

Bill graduated from Summit High School in Summit, NJ, and also attended The Peddie School in Hightstown, NJ. He graduated from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1956 where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and also lettered in Varsity Lacrosse.

After graduating from UNC-CH, he began working for Wachovia Bank and Trust in Raleigh for a short time before he was drafted by the U.S. Armed Forces and was stationed for two years in Landshut, Germany. Upon his return to Raleigh, he continued his 37 year career with Wachovia. In 1967 he was elected Vice President and Manager of City Accounts in Charlotte. He was then selected to be Senior Vice President and City Executive of Wilmington in 1972. He graduated with honors from The Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University and later completed the Executive Program at UNC-CH.

He was a loyal member of St. James Parish where he had served on the Vestry. He was an active member in the community serving as Chairman of the United Way Campaign, Board Chairman of the UNCW Foundation and board member of the Committee of 100 for Industrial Development, the Bellamy Mansion and St. John's Art Gallery. He was dedicated to the Cornelia Nixon Davis Health Care Center board and Babies Hospital Foundation where he was instrumental in establishing an endowed scholarship fund in Nursing at Cape Fear Community College.

There will be a private burial at Oakdale Cemetery. A Memorial Service celebrating his life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, February 8, 2013, at St. James Parish, Wilmington, N.C. The family would be pleased to receive friends following the service in the Great Hall at St. James.
