Dozens Come to Englewood's Wright Arena Ice Skating Reopening

The ice skating's free through Sunday at the John T. Wright Arena in Mackay Park.

It was a soft opening indeed for the John T. Wright Arena in Englewood's Mackay Park.

After being closed since April, 2012, the ice skating rink reopened to the public with free ice skating Thursday. Mayor Frank Huttle announced the holiday treat on his website, and proclaimed his delight at the "dozens" of residents who showed up for the free skating.

Huttle, who was at the rink for the reopening, posted on his website that he was pleased with "all of the positive comments and show of enthusiasm. This was indeed an exciting and fun filled day both for the children as well as the adults."

The free skating will continue through Sunday, Dec. 29, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Skate rentals are $3.

The Wright Arena had been closed for repairs and was set to reopen in November of last year when it was struck by Hurricane Sandy. The storm caused major roof damage and led to the facility being shuttered.

In September, the council voted for $386,000 for roof repairs, but not for further improvements. The bleachers and concession stand remain closed.

A grand opening for the ice skating rink is planned, but no firm date's been set.

"Stay tuned for more to come," Huttle said on his website.
