Englewood Man Dies After Prison Assault

Inmate suffered "severe trauma" prosecutor says.

The death of an inmate from Englewood found badly injured at a Hunterdon County prison last week has been ruled a homicide, authorities said Monday.

Joshua Jones, 23, suffered “severe trauma” in an Aug. 14 assault at the Mountainview Youth Correctional Facility in Clinton Township, said Hunterdon County Prosecutor Anthony P. Kearns III. Jones was flown to Morristown Medical Center where he died two days later.

Kearns said Jones was found in a dorm where several inmates live. His death was ruled a homicide on Saturday.

“Mr. Joshua Jones was a young man serving his debt to society when his life was violently ended. Our condolences go out to the Jones family. We are aggressively investigating the circumstances leading up to what occurred,” Kearns said in a statement.

Jones was serving time for weapons possession, criminal restraint and drug offenses, state records show. He would have been eligible for parole in January 2013.
