Englewood Schools To Close Again Friday

School officials had been making decisions on whether schools would open the next day on a day-by-day basis, but the president of the Englewood school board said power issues in some of the schools forced officials to close schools again.

Unlike in many other school districts in the area where officials made the decision as early as Tuesday or Wednesday to close schools for the rest of the week after Sandy pummeled towns, Englewood school officials have been taking it day-by-day.

But they have decided to close schools again on Friday, according to Board of Education president Stephen Brown, making it an entire week off for Englewood students after all.

“Schools won’t be open [Friday],” Brown said Thursday evening. “We are planning for a Monday opening if we have power. As you know, most of Englewood is still down. We may have a better idea tomorrow from the point of what to expect.”

He said Superintendent Donald Carlisle has been making the decision every day at about 5 p.m.

A spokesperson for the school district had said earlier in the day Thursday that Carlisle was hoping to be able to open as early as Friday, but Brown said that’s not going to be possible, largely because of power issues.

“Three schools are down without power,” he said. “One of those three is working with a generator.”

Brown also said there wasn’t any significant damage to any of the schools as far as he is aware.

“We had some trees fall, landscape-wise, but at this point, I don’t think there was any physical damage,” he said.
