Englewood Swears in First Korean Firefighter
Three probationary firefighters officially entered the department Tuesday.
The Englewood City Council swore in three firefighters who help form what Fire Chief Gerald Marion called the most diverse class in the history of the department.
With family by their side, Peter Lee, Nick Rodriguez and Joseph William Hoyle Jr. became probationary firefighters Tuesday night.
Along with the other two firefighters sworn in over the last six months, they represent the "most diverse" class of firefighters pledged to serve the city, Marion said.

Lee, who is of Korean descent, became the first Asian-American firefighter in Englewood history, according to Marion.
It's a particularly big moment for a community that's grown "substantially" in Englewood in recent years, Councilman Eugene Skurnick said.

Hoyle Jr. shouldn't have trouble acclimating himself to the firefighter lifestyle – his father has been a firefighter in Englewood for about 20 years.
Marion imparted a reminder to the three young firefighters, saying they will face difficult days and often find themselves in dangerous situations, but it's critical that they remember the honor that comes with serving the public.
"This is a great day for each council member here," added Mayor Frank Huttle.
