Englewood Jr. Track & Field Team Sending Athletes to Junior Olympics
Team asking for donations to help fund the trip.

More than 30 Englewood athletes will be represented in the Junior Olympic games this summer.
According to Englewood Jr. Track and Field Coach Cherie Ware-Powell, 34 athletes representing the NJ Striders are gearing up for the regional games in Jamestown, New York. After regionals, it's on to the nationals at North Carolina A&T University. Last year, a number of athletes represented Englewood and placed in the top 20 nationally.
Though the team – started 24 years ago by Ware-Powell's father – is financially supported by the Englewood Parks and Recreation Department during the season, it doesn't see funds during off-season championship meets.

"Once the championship season begins the team is on its own," Ware-Powell said. "To run at the next level the team has to upgrade the basic uniform to a more professional style for better performance. The coaches are then left to fundraising for monies to travel with the team which includes transportation, room and board."
Though the organization tries to keep costs low – particulary given that many families can't afford to send their children to the games – it could use a helping hand.

"We try to give each child with the ability and talent to compete at this level a chance to compete with the best of the best in the nation," Ware-Powell said.
