Knife-Wielding Carjacker At NJ Gas Station Leads Cops On Chase Before Crashing: Prosecutor

HUNTERDON COUNTY, NJ — A man was charged after police say he carjacked a vehicle at knifepoint from a gas station in Hunterdon County.

Jarrett C. Burd, 26, of Hampton, was charged with a slew of charges following the alleged carjacking and multi-jurisdiction police chase, announced Hunterdon County Prosecutor Renée M. Robeson.

On Monday at around 3:22 p.m., a motor vehicle carjacking was reported on Frenchtown Road in Milford Borough at the Citgo Gas Station.

New Jersey State Police spoke to the owner of a grey 2022 Toyota 4Runner, who said they had their vehicle stolen after being threatened with a knife, said Robeson.

The vehicle was reportedly driving erratically in Frenchtown Borough and heading south into Kingwood Township.

Multiple police agencies began chasing the stolen vehicle through multiple jurisdictions in Hunterdon County.

New Jersey State Police also pursued the vehicle on County Route 579 in Raritan Township.

At around 4:26 p.m., the stolen Toyota 4Runner crashed into another vehicle on County Route 523 in Raritan Township, said Robeson.

Both vehicles became disabled, and the driver of the second vehicle was treated for apparent minor injuries and taken to the Hunterdon Medical Center for evaluation.

New Jersey State Police and Raritan Township Police extracted the driver from the stolen vehicle. The driver of the stolen vehicle, who also had apparent minor injuries, was identified as Burd.

Burd was charged with one count carjacking, a first-degree offense, one count eluding, a second-degree offense, one count theft of a motor vehicle, a third-degree offense, one count one count possession of weapons for unlawful purposes, a third-degree offense, one count unlawful possession of weapons, fourth-degree offense, one count assault by auto, a fourth-degree offense, and one count aggravated assault of emergency medical services personnel, a fourth-degree offense, one count of theft, a disorderly person’s offense.

On Tuesday, Senior Assistant Prosecutor Tangerla Thomas filed a motion for pre-trial detention. Burd is being held at the Warren County Jail and is scheduled to appear on Friday before the Judge Christopher J. Garrenger.

Burd faces a term of imprisonment between 10 and 20 years and a fine not to exceed $200,000 on the first-degree charges.
