About Town: A Slice of Heaven, Part 2

The new kids on the block are no second stringers

Now that we’ve taken you back to Fort Lee’s old school pizzerias, it’s time to check out the new (by comparison) kids on the block.

It’s true that after re-visiting all the familiar joints, we were a little bit skeptical about how these new places would measure up. About Town is happy to report that the “new” pizzerias can certainly hold their own. Here they are:

Baggio's Pizza

Located on Main Street, a few doors down from Holtje’s Hardware Store, takes thin crust pizza to a new, extraordinary level. Their slices are crisp, thin and yet, they can hold a generous amount of toppings, like sausage, without caving under the pressure.

As soon as you walk in, there’s a counter and a few tables where you can sit to eat your slice, but the back holds a cozy dining area where you can order pasta, veal, chicken and other specially prepared meals. It’s a great place to meet friends or have a quiet dinner for two.

Pomodoro

Located at the very end of the Junction on Abbott Boulevard, Pomodoro is well on its way to joining the ranks of Fort Lee’s old school pizza giants.

Pomodoro’s slices are large, the sauce a delicious combination of sweet and tart, the cheese soft and stringy, the toppings generous.

Just doors down from Pizza King, Pomodoro has successfully managed to establish its own faithful following of pizza lovers.

Pomodoro is an out-of-the-way spot that has a charming, small garden area with outdoor seating either to eat your slice or order a more substantial meal of pasta, chicken or veal. It’s one of those places that has settled into the neighborhood so well that it’s hard to believe it used to be a chicken and rib place.

Pomodoro is located at 795 Abbott Blvd.; 201-224-0800

Nova Pasta & Pizza

Location, location, location. And you can’t get a more visible (or busy) location than Whiteman Plaza. That, and the fact that the Plaza attracts a large crowd of high schoolers who congregate at the mall to meet their friends, makes Nova a very popular place to grab a slice.

offers every pizza topping imaginable--pineapple, ham, buffalo chicken, veggies, and so much more. Their slices are very large and the crusts hold up well to all those toppings.

Nova Pasta & Pizza is as well known for their wings as they are for their pizza, and the day that we visited there were more order for wings than pizza. We’ll have to save that one if we ever do a column on “wings.”

Nova Pasta & Pizza is located inside Whiteman Plaza,1605 Lemoine Ave.; 201-346-0990

Cugino’s Pizza

Almost hidden inside the Washington Bridge Plaza (where Walgreen’s is located) is much welcomed . Considering its close proximity to Fort Lee High School, it must be giving McDonald’s a little competition with the lunch crowd during the school year.

Cugino’s dishes up tasty slices of pizza--not too much sauce, just enough soft stringy mozzarella cheese, and generous toppings. It’s also the only pizzeria we visited that offered a pepper and onion slice that looked and tasted just like Ray’s Original in New York City.

Cugino’s Pizza is located inside the Washington Bridge Plaza, 2151 Lemoine Ave.; 201-947-0947

Presto Pizza

Housed in the former Virgie’s Deli space, has filled the pizza void in that part of West Fort Lee.

Presto offers slices that are thick, heavily sauced, evenly cheesed, and easy to fold. Presto offers a variety of toppings, including barbecue chicken and ziti.

Parking can be problematic during peak Main Street hours, but that’s why they have delivery.

Presto Pizza is located at 440 Main St.; 201-461-4400
