This weekend belongs to Dad. Whether he likes to hike, walk, barbecue, eat out or just hang on the hammock, here are some ideas sure to make dad smile.

Dinner for Dad

Does Dad love dinner out? Here are a few great area suggestions:

Always a great local choice, dad will have a hard time choosing between the double pork chops, Delmonico steak, and veal dishes. Our suggestion is to start out by ordering dad a nice cold cocktail along with the cold seafood salad appetizer and let him peruse the menu at his leisure. It does get quite crowded on Father’s Day, so call ahead for reservations.

If dad likes steak and has never been to Prime & Beyond, then this would be an over-the-moon treat for him. Yes, it’s pricey, but you’ll have to travel a lot farther than up Main Street to find a better steak. Proof that it’s so good? It’s a firemen favorite. Prime & Beyond has limited seating, so call ahead to make reservations. Oh, and it's BYOB so don't forget the wine!

If it’s hard to tear dad away from the game, he’ll love The Bike since he can have a great meal, in a casual setting, and not miss one inning of baseball. Treat dad to their outrageous Canadian Baby Back Ribs. Again, it gets crowded so make reservations! If he really won’t leave his flat screen T.V. The Bicycle Club offers “Father's Day Take-Out” beginning at 1 p.m. The Bike, strongly rooted in Fort Lee, has always been a town favorite.

If Dad loves nothing more than grilling, go to Butcher Department and load up on some of the best steak, thickest chops, chicken, all kinds of freshly made sausages, ribs and more. Fairway has been running great sales on their steaks and chops.

Five Facts About Father's Day

Father's Day is a time to honor dads for all they do during the year and to remember and honor those who are no longer with us. Here are some interesting facts about this holiday.

1. There are an estimated 70.1 million fathers in the United States, according to the federal government. 
2. The holiday was started by Sonora Dodd of Spokane, Washington back in 1909 as a way to honor her father, a widowed Civil War veteran who raised six children on his own. The mayor of Spokane proclaimed June 19, 1910 as the first Father's Day--June was selected as it was the month Dodd's father, William Smart, was born.
3. President Lyndon Johnson was the first U.S. president to issue a proclamation honoring dads back in 1966 and he declared the third Sunday in June as the official date of the holiday.
4. Richard Nixon signed the holiday into law in 1972, making it an official legal holiday.
5. Strange but true, more collect calls are made on Father's Day than on any other day of the year according to Snopes.com.
